We have an excellent line-up of authors, including: Tatjana Bergelt, Stephen Blackwell, Robert Bringhurst, John DeMerritt, Patricia Lagarde, Amanda Marchand, Daniel Mellis, Molly Schwartzburg, Stephanie Stillo, Laurie Whitehill, and Matvei Yankelvich. No Touching: Discovering the Art of Books Online

I was awarded the Juror’s Choice Award for ConTEXT III at the Foundry Arts Center in St. Charles, MO. The juror, Levi Sherman, had this to say about my piece An Anatomical Exercise:

An Anatomical Exercise joins the visual vocabulary of sentence diagrams with that of the human vascular system, drawing a parallel between the life-giving power of blood and language. Text is both medium and subject matter, executed with the impeccable craftsmanship and elegant layout that such a minimalist composition demands. The simple accordion structure allows the reader to edit the text by folding the paper, mirroring Hulsey’s own process of excerpting the poetic text from a 17th Century medical treatise. The reader is invited to treat language as a material and to make their own meaning. The structure also plays with the centuries-old metaphor of the book as a body, further cementing the importance of books and language in society. This piece captures the spirit of ConTEXT III, revealing how deeply intertwined language is not only with visual art, but with all aspects of the human experience.

I am delighted and honored to announce that I have been awarded a 2020 Artist Fellowship from the Massachusetts Cultural Council in the area of Drawing and Printmaking. I am very grateful to the award jurors, the Mass Cultural Council, and the Massachusetts State Legislature for this generous award! There is a very nice article about it here. 2/19/20

Sarah Hulsey, Picturing Language

Please join me for the opening of an exhibition of six international artists, Katie Baldwin, Sarah Hulsey, Fuko Ito, Mariko Jesse, Yoonmi Nam, and Mia O. This exhibition, titled Into the Fold, is the result of an ongoing creative conversation where artists respond to themes of folding/unfolding, portability, lineage, and community using mokuhanga (Japanese woodblock printing) as the primary medium. The show will be at C.R. Ettinger Gallery in Philadelphia from March 30-April 1, 2018. The opening is on Friday, March 30 from 6-8 pm. 3/15/18

The Codex Foundation has published a monograph of Betty Bright’s CODEX 2017 talk in their CODE(X)+1 series. In it, Dr. Bright writes about the work of Sarah Bryant, Sara Langworthy, and me. 9/27/17

From July 28-August 31, 2017, I will be a resident artist at MI-LAB (Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratories) in Lake Kawagushi, Japan. There I will work on a new series of mokuhanga prints, woodblock prints that use traditional Japanese materials and techniques. I was selected as a winner of the 2016 Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists, juried by Liz Munsell from the MFA. I am very honored to have been chosen and look forward to the six-month fellowship. I have been selected as one of five finalists for the 2016 Walter Feldman Fellowship for Emerging Artists. The two winning Fellows will be selected in November or December. I am looking forward to the opportunity to show with the other finalists this fall and to be considered for the fellowship. 9/24/15

I have received the 2015 Fath Scholarship for Artists and Artisans of the Book from Rare Book School. I will be using it to take The Art and Science of Cartography, 200-1500 with John Hessler at the Library of Congress in July 2015. 12/22/14
